Brazil's new energy vehicle industry is at a critical juncture in its transition from the introductory phase to the growth phase, having established itself as the world's sixth-largest automotive market and the core battleground for new energy mobility in Latin America. In the first half of 2026, Brazil's new energy vehicle market experienced rapid growth, with sales of hybrid and battery electric vehicles surging year-on-year to record highs.
In the first quarter of 2026, registrations of electrified vehicles in Brazil exceeded 95,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 88%. From January to July 2026, registrations of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Brazil totaled approximately 1.625 million units, up 19% year-on-year, of which hybrid vehicle registrations reached approximately 191,000 units, up 88% year-on-year, and battery electric vehicle registrations exceeded 116,000 units, reflecting a year-on-year growth rate of 209%. Aceglio Junior, President of the National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution of Brazil, stated that although the overall volume of Brazil's new energy vehicle market remains smaller than that of the internal combustion engine vehicle market, its market share is continuing to expand steadily. In April 2026, electric and hybrid vehicles accounted for 18.3% of Brazil's light vehicle market, with sales exceeding 40,000 units. In August 2026, electric vehicles (including battery electric vehicles and various hybrid models) accounted for 24.3% of total light vehicle sales in Brazil, the highest share on record; registrations of electric vehicles for that month totaled 63,709 units, surpassing the 61,846 units recorded in July (a market share of 23.3%). In August 2025, Brazil sold 24,755 electric vehicles, less than half of the figure for the same period in 2026; cumulative sales in 2026 to date stand at approximately 367,500 units, representing an increase of approximately 134% compared with 156,700 units in the same period of 2025. The Brazilian National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers projects that Brazil's new energy vehicle sales will reach 420,000 to 450,000 units in 2026, up from 285,400 units in 2025.
In terms of imports, from January to April 2026, Brazil imported a total of 168,100 vehicles, of which approximately 80,100 units originated from China, representing a year-on-year increase of 81.6% and accounting for 47.7% of Brazil's imported vehicle sales. In the first half of 2026, Brazil imported more than 280,000 vehicles, nearly half of which came from China.
In terms of retail, in February 2026, BYD's Dolphin electric model ranked first in Brazil's monthly retail vehicle sales with 4,094 units sold, becoming the first new energy vehicle model in Brazil's history to top the monthly retail ranking; as of April 2026, this model had ranked first in Brazil's retail market sales for three consecutive months. In April 2026, BYD surpassed Volkswagen with sales of 14,914 units to claim the top position in Brazil's monthly total retail sales ranking, marking the first time a Chinese new energy vehicle brand has outperformed traditional internal combustion engine vehicle brands to top Brazil's monthly total retail sales chart.
